Data Privacy Day 2026: 5+1 Ways to Safeguard Your Business in the Age of AI

January 28 is Data Privacy Day. In 2026, the need for meaningful protection is more pressing than ever: cyber threats are getting smarter, attacks more targeted, and data more valuable than ever.
At Artios, following the best practices of industry leaders such as Sophos, we have compiled the most critical steps every modern business should implement today.

1. AI & Privacy: Be careful what you “share”
Artificial intelligence tools (such as ChatGPT) are extremely powerful, but they require caution. Any information you enter may be stored or analyzed, depending on the provider’s settings and terms.
Never enter sensitive customer data, personal information, or company code into public AI tools without approved usage policies and appropriate privacy settings.

2. Authentication (MFA) is no longer optional
The simple password has essentially “died.” Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is now the most effective way to prevent the vast majority of attacks that rely on stolen or compromised credentials.
The absence of MFA is not just a technical risk—it is now considered administrative negligence.

3. Practice data minimization
The best protection for a piece of data is… not having it.
Review your databases: Do you really need all customer details dating back to 2015? If they do not serve an active business or legal purpose, delete them securely.
Data minimization is not only a best practice, but also a core GDPR requirement.

4. Watch out for Social Engineering 2.0
Phishing attacks have evolved. Today they leverage AI, voice or video deepfakes, and psychological pressure.
An “urgent” call from the “CEO” requesting an immediate funds transfer or asking for passwords may not be what it seems. Ongoing employee training is critical so they can recognize unusual or suspicious requests—even when they appear to come from “familiar” people.

5. Update everything—now
Software and system vulnerabilities are the most common “back door” for cybercriminals.
Make sure all your business systems—operating systems, applications, servers, and endpoints—are running the latest security updates.

+1. Plan for the worst-case scenario
Data protection is not only about confidentiality, but also availability.
A well-designed Backup & Recovery plan ensures that, even in the event of an attack or failure, your customers’ data remains safe, intact, and accessible.

Privacy as a strategic advantage
Protecting personal data is not an obstacle to digital progress. On the contrary, it is the strategic advantage of every modern business.
At Artios, we turn data security from an “IT obligation” into a solid foundation on which trust-based relationships, resilience, and sustainable business growth are built.
