Microsoft Moves into a Passwordless Future for Over 1 Billion Users
Microsoft is moving towards eliminating traditional passwords, introducing passkeys as the primary method of authentication. Passkeys use cryptographic key pairs, storing one key on the user’s device and the other on the website or service, allowing secure and fast logins via biometrics or a PIN.
Implementation Timeline:
Login and registration page upgrades will roll out gradually from March through the end of April 2025, affecting services like Outlook, Windows, and Microsoft 365.
New Design and Functionality:
The new interface is based on Microsoft’s Fluent 2 design language and includes dark mode, offering a modern and user-friendly experience. The focus is on simplifying the login process, reducing cognitive load, and increasing speed.
Advantages of Passkeys:
- Security: Passkeys are resistant to phishing attacks and reduce the risk of data breaches.
- Ease of Use: They enable faster and simpler logins without the need to remember complex passwords.
- Synchronization: Passkeys can sync across devices, making access from different locations easier.
